Measure A FAQ

WHAT ABOUT OTHER SOURCES OF FUNDING?
Ravenswood has brought in over $50 million in outside philanthropy, and over $15 million more is anticipated to come through State and private matching funds. The only way to unlock these additional funds is by having the community demonstrate its commitment to these improvements by approving a general obligation bond.

WHAT ARE GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS?
Bonds have funded a significant portion of school construction projects in Ravenswood and throughout San Mateo County and California, and can help communities qualify for matching funds. Similar to a home loan, General Obligation bonds are typically repaid over approximately 30 years. General Obligation bonds are repaid through a tax on all taxable property – residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial – located within the District’s boundaries.

WHAT WOULD MEASURE A COST ME?
The projected annual tax rate is $27.50 per $100,000 of taxable value for property owners. This would cost the typical homeowner in Ravenswood $184 a year.

ARE THERE SAFEGUARDS FOR TAXPAYERS?
100% of Measure A funds will be spent within Ravenswood. The District has an independent citizens’ oversight committee and conducts annual audits to ensure funds are only spent on voter-approved projects improving classrooms and facilities, and not for administration or salaries. These safeguards would continue to apply for Measure A, and all audit reports are available on our facilities website.

WHO COULD VOTE ON MEASURE A?
All voters within Ravenswood City School District would be able to vote on Measure A, regardless of whether or not they have children in the District.

WHY DID THE BOARD PUT MEASURE A ON THE BALLOT?
The upcoming closure of a local private school will cause an unexpected increase in students in Ravenswood schools. The closure of this private school is not something the District could have anticipated, and will lead to overcrowded classrooms and schools if it is not addressed. Measure A will ensure that the District can maintain class sizes and continue to offer all students a high-quality education by providing more classroom space.
