BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND

In 2021, we worked with our union partners to create an innovative salary scale and evaluation process. This allows us to offer our teachers among the highest salaries in the county, enable strong teachers to progress more quickly, and facilitate a more meaningful evaluation process.

Unlike traditional salary schedules which credit units beyond a BA degree, our Career Ladder is focused on performance-based pay. As a Ravenswood employee, your annual salary advancement is based on evaluation ratings rather than years of experience. Teachers can advance anywhere between 1 and 5 rungs based on their performance (rather than the traditional model of moving up 1 rung or step for each year with the district.) This provides an opportunity for significant salary growth in one year.

Check out our video overview of the Ravenswood teacher compensation model, and use our New Teacher Salary Estimator tool to calculate your starting salary at Ravenswood based on the current Career Ladder. You can also find other relevant resources and answers to frequently asked questions below.

Fully credentialed: Individuals with valid full (preliminary or clear) CA or out-of-state teaching credentials
Non-credentialed: Individuals serving emergency credentials or intern credentials
Emergency and non-credentialed: A newly hired Emergency or Intern Credentialed teacher is limited to salary step 1.
Years of Full-time Experience: A year of full-time, credentialed experience is defined as serving 75% or more of the contractual work days in a single complete school year with a valid credential. Time worked that is less than 75% in a complete school year is not counted.
FTE: Full-time equivalent. Salary is also determined by full or part time positions. Individuals working part-time will receive a prorated salary that reflects the number of hours / days worked. For example, if an individual works 0.5 FTE, or 50%, they receive 50% of a full-time salary.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

I’m an experienced teacher. Will I get credit for my prior years of service?
Yes, you will get credit for all prior years of credentialed teaching (up to a maximum of 20 years). We do not credit teaching experience completed without a valid credential.

Where will I start on the career ladder?
Every year of teaching experience counts for 2.5 rungs on the career ladder. For example: A teacher with 4 years of teaching experience would be at rung 10 (= 4 x 2.5). On the 2023-24 salary scale, that would be $79,060. Use our New Teacher Salary Estimator tool to calculate your starting salary as a new Ravenswood teacher.

We also offer additional stipends based on additional responsibilities, as well as a a $3000 annual salary add-on for National Board Certification in Teaching. See our Career Ladder for more details.

How do I know what my future salary will look like?
Each following year, you move up the career ladder based on your annual performance evaluation:
  • Emerging rating = you go up 1 rung on the career ladder the following year
  • Exploring rating =  you go up 2 rungs on the career ladder the following year
  • Applying rating = you go up 3 rungs on the career ladder the following year
  • Integrating rating = you go up 4 rungs on the career ladder the following year
  • Innovating rating = you go up 5 rungs on the career ladder the following year

For example: If you start at rung 10, after three years of “Applying” ratings you would have advanced 9 rungs (= 3 x 3). On our current scale, that would be $89,817 (rung 19). If instead you had three years of “Innovating” ratings, you would advance 15 rungs (= 3 x 5) to rung 25 or $96,989 on our current scale.)
